Rebecca Camacho Presents is pleased to announce Arcane Appetites, Colombian-American artist Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. Engaging a research-based, interdisciplinary practice that investigates the complex intersections of migration, identity, gender, cultural memory, and the effects of colonization, Friedemann-Sánchez’s installation fills both the gallery’s main exhibition space and Project Room.
Moving between Bogotá, New York, and Lincoln, Nebraska, Friedemann-Sánchez’s work centers on the hybridization of cultures, utilizing a research-based practice that merges personal heritage with the material history of the Americas.
About the Work
The exhibition is rooted in the artist’s ongoing Dream Map and Cornucopia series—ornate collage still-lifes created on Tyvek, a material serving as a metaphor for land extraction. These works reinterpret Barníz de Pasto, a millennia-old Colombian craft, to transform ceramic vessels into bountiful cornucopias teeming with flora and fauna.
At the center of the gallery stands Batea with Figs, a seven-panel free-standing screen or biombo. This piece merges the global history of the Manila Galleon trade with personally significant imagery, including magnolias from her studio, orchids from Colombia, and the state bird of Nebraska. In the Project Room, a suite of smaller works allows for intimate inspection of the intricate textures and detailed bounty of her Cornucopia vessels.
About the Artist
Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez (b. 1961) is a 2025 Joan Mitchell Fellow who earned her B.F.A. from Otis Art Institute and her M.F.A. from New York University. Her research-based, interdisciplinary practice investigates the complex intersections of migration, gender, and the effects of colonization.
She has exhibited extensively since 1989 at institutions including the Harvard Museums of Science and Culture, El Museo del Barrio, and the Bronx Museum of the Arts. A recipient of a Smithsonian Artist Fellowship and a Pollock-Krasner grant, her work is held in the permanent collections of the Cleveland Museum, the Everson Museum, and the Museo de Arte Moderno in Bogotá, among others.
