The Commercial Break Marketplace is a new community activation series designed to bring renewed energy and connection to Commercial Street, one of San Francisco Chinatown’s historic corridors. By transforming the block into a pedestrian-only public space, the Marketplace offers a welcoming environment featuring pop-up vendors, community seating, and cultural programming.
Location: Commercial Street, between Kearny and Montgomery Streets.
Series Schedule
Following the January 17 kickoff, the street will open to pedestrians weekly every Friday and Saturday from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM through March 2026.
Each month features a signature themed activation:
- January 17: Lunar New Year Shopping Event
- February 14: Valentine’s Day Match-Making Event
- March 21: Asian Street Food Demonstration
On Saturday, January 17, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM, the series officially launches its Lunar New Year celebration. This festive kickoff welcomes the Year of the Horse with:
- Traditional Performances: A Lion Dance and Giant Labubu kickoff starts at 1:00 PM, followed by appearances from the God of Fortune.
- Cultural Activities: Visitors can participate in Chinese art demonstrations, hands-on tutorials, and contribute to a Lunar New Year Wish Wall.
- Family & Entertainment: The street will feature live busking, music, a dedicated kids’ play area, and festive street decorations.
- Local Shopping: A curated marketplace showcases a variety of pop-up vendors alongside established Chinatown merchants.
This initiative is a collaborative effort led by the Community Youth Center of San Francisco (CYC) in partnership with the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) and Self-Help for the Elderly. The project aims to activate public space, enhance neighborhood safety through increased foot traffic, and foster community-centered experiences in Chinatown.
