Rebecca Camacho Presents is pleased to announce Stacy Lynn Waddell Stranger. The exhibition marks the solo debut of the artist at the gallery. In the Project Room, Stacy Lynn Waddell debuts the first two works from Stranger, a new series of 4-foot-diameter gilded sculptural drawings on paper—her largest and most intricate to date.
About the Exhibition
Inspired by James Baldwin’s 1953 essay Stranger in the Village, the series explores themes of otherness, identity, sexuality, and fear of the unknown. Using floral still life as a metaphor for the human body, Waddell creates low-relief botanical forms with handmade paper and pastiglia—a Renaissance technique—fossilized in 22-karat gold. The works blend traditional gilding with sculptural drawing to examine historical lineage, power, and the intersection of beauty and provocation.
About the Artist
Stacy Lynn Waddell (b. 1966, Washington, D.C.; lives in Durham, NC) earned her BA from NC State University and MFA from UNC at Chapel Hill. Her work addresses culture, history, and visibility, often taking inspiration from historical and literary figures. Waddell has received prestigious honors including a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant and residencies at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Civitella Ranieri Foundation, and Suzanne Fitzallen Jackson Foundation. Her work has been exhibited at The Studio Museum in Harlem, Brooklyn Museum, and the Baltimore Museum of Art, and is held in public collections including the Princeton University Art Museum and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
