About Kai Lyons Cuban Changui

Kai Lyons is a San Francisco–based guitarist, educator, and bandleader known for his stylistic versatility and deep connection to jazz and Afro-Caribbean traditions. A native of the Excelsior District, Lyons was immersed in music and community from an early age.

Lyons has performed extensively throughout the Bay Area and internationally, appearing with artists such as Mike Clark and Donald Harrison of The Headhunters, as well as pianist Larry Vuckovich and organist Wil Blades. He has also performed with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra and on stages including SFJAZZ and major festivals. A dedicated student of global music, Lyons has traveled to Cuba, Brazil, Ghana, and beyond, developing a strong connection to traditional Cuban forms such as changüí. He is notably the first foreigner to win first prize at the International Changüí Festival in Guantánamo, Cuba, performing on the tres.
