836M is pleased to host its next artists-in-residence Urban Jazz Dance Company (UJDC) under the direction of Antoine Hunter Purple Fire Crow. Since 2007, UJDC has earned accolades for its artistry and advocacy in expanding opportunities for Deaf and disabled artists. A reception marking the start of UJDC’s residency will take place at 836M at 6:30 p.m. on March 13. In addition to rehearsing inside of 836M’s street-facing gallery, UJDC will curate a series of public workshops and conversations, alongside three exhibitions of visual art. Their residency will culminate in an evening-length multimedia performance, May 15 – 17.

This event will introduce the artist and the concept behind #Deafwoke Communication and Conversation. It is a soft opening, designed as an interactive experience rather than a structured performance. Attendees will have the opportunity to mingle, listen to a brief presentation, and enjoy an immersive experience with a Deaf DJ, who will incorporate visual and rhythmic elements into the space.
