Join KALW for a live Town Hall conversation with San Francisco District 3 Supervisor Danny Sauter.

San Francisco is at a crossroads — and few neighborhoods capture its challenges and opportunities like District 3. From iconic visitor destinations like North Beach, Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf to the evolving status of the Financial District and Union Square, this part of the city sits at the heart of San Francisco’s economic, cultural, and civic identity.

Supervisor Sauter will join KALW Executive Producer Ben Trefny for a wide-ranging discussion about the future of these communities — from housing and small business recovery to public safety, neighborhood identity, and the role of civic media in shaping local change.

This event is part of KALW’s ongoing Bay Agenda series, connecting residents directly with the leaders and changemakers shaping the Bay Area’s future. Attendees will have a chance to ask questions and share perspectives on the issues that matter most to their neighborhoods.

Danny Sauter represents San Francisco’s District 3, encompassing the Barbary Coast & Northern Waterfront, Chinatown, Lower Nob Hill, Financial District, Fisherman’s Wharf, Jackson Square, Nob Hill, North Beach, Polk Gulch, Russian Hill, Telegraph Hill, and Union Square.

Danny has a deep background in District 3’s neighborhoods, including serving on the board of his neighborhood association, North Beach Neighbors, for more than 8 years. During this time, he started and ran the North Beach Farmers Market, coordinated a free delivery service to support restaurants during the pandemic, and organized neighborhood cleanups. He served as the first Housing Chair of the San Francisco Sierra Club and as the District 3 Director of the Eastern Neighborhoods Democratic Club. Prior to being elected to office, Danny was the Executive Director of San Francisco Neighborhood Centers Together, a citywide coalition of community centers serving youth and older adults.

Danny and his wife have lived in North Beach for more than a decade. When he’s not working on community issues, Danny enjoys exploring San Francisco’s bookstores and coffee shops, traversing the city by Muni, and cheering on the Giants.

Ben Trefny has been part of the KALW family since 2003, where he currently serves as Executive Producer. As Executive News Editor, News Director, and Interim Executive Director, he helped the news department win numerous regional and national awards for long- and short-form journalism. He also helped create numerous training programs — for teenagers, incarcerated people, and early-career journalists — and has taught hundreds of audio producers. His current work focuses on journalism, live events, and partnerships.
