Jeremy Umland, founder of Ozumo, found his passion for Japanese cuisine as an exchange student in 1979. Situated in the Port of Fukuoka, north of Nagasaki Province, Jeremy became fully immersed in Japan’s culture and hospitality. Many years later, upon relocation to San Francisco, he began to develop the Ozumo concept, opening the first restaurant inside Kimpton’s Harbor Court Hotel in 2001. Despite the Bay Area’s thriving Asian Cuisine culture, Ozumo set itself apart by truly focusing on the grand culture and beauty of Japanese food, drink, and custom.

Ozumo San Francisco was the first U.S. Restaurant designed by Japan’s renowned Super Potato Design, lending true authenticity to its aesthetic approach. It was one of the first large-scale, high-end Japanese dining experiences offering sushi & sashimi, a robata grill, and the largest premium imported sake list in the U.S. Ozumo has been awarded “Top 100 Restaurants” by the San Francisco Chronicle, and continues to rank as a top restaurant in the city’s fine-dining market.

May 2021 marks the 20th Anniversary of Ozumo San Francisco and we look forward to welcoming our guests for many more years to come.
