Jackson Square
Jackson St & Montgomery St
From Waterfront to Historic Hub
Originally built on landfill from abandoned Gold Rush ships, Jackson Square was San Francisco's waterfront and is defined by its brick, cast-iron storefronts, and 1850s architecture. While commerce flourished on Montgomery Street, the infamous Barbary Coast on Pacific Avenue was where fortunes were spent.
The area's greatest legacy is its survival: it famously endured the 1906 earthquake and fires, making its structures some of the oldest in the city. Today, that historic charm attracts tech, international design, and fine dining, making it one of downtown’s most coveted neighborhoods.
