About the Artist

British artist Doddz makes public art that brings people together at a time when tech is doing the opposite. Sky News called him one of the most prolific AR artists in the world and his work spans across projection mapping, augmented reality, murals, sculpture and data-driven installations, and his goal is simple: to bring happiness through art. This year he became the first UK artist selected for an artist residency in South Korea and South Africa.

About the Work

Winterport tells the story of Ben and Abbie, two lovers separated by the sea.

For a year, Ben has been away at sea. Every night, Abbie waits for him at the dock, watching the harbour through her telescope, longing for the boat that will bring him home. On this cold winter’s night, the frozen waterfront comes alive as she keeps her vigil once more.

Tonight, he returns.

As the northern lights rise over the tower, they finally see each other again. Unable to wait a moment longer, she leaps into the harbour, and he pulls her from the water into his arms.

What follows is pure joy. The dancers burst into life in their glowing windows, and the couple rise together on aerial straps into the clock as lanterns float into the sky. That weightlessness is the feeling of seeing someone you love for the first time after a long time apart.

Set to Sleep Little Harbor, the installation features animations created from the movements of aerial acrobats filmed wearing motion capture suits. Every movement audiences see was first performed by a real person, bringing an authentic human element to the spectacle unfolding across the Ferry Building's facade.

Winterport is about two people finding each other across distance and time. Even on the coldest night, love is worth the leap.
