About the Artist
Visual Endeavors is a creative technology studio based in Santa Cruz, California, working at the intersection of art and technology. From its studio and R&D space in the historic Wrigley Building, the team blends creative vision with technical precision to build immersive experiences that are visually striking and built to perform. Its work spans brand activations, concert tours, and live experiences around the world.
Half creatives and half nerds, the Visual Endeavors team brings storytelling, design, engineering, and emerging technology together under one roof. Their goal is to turn ambitious ideas into memorable experiences that hold up just as well technically as they do creatively.
About the Work
On the darkest night of the year, a single flame travels the world, illuminating the many ways cultures find warmth and connection through light. From hundreds of oil lamps floating down a river to a Persian family gathered around a table until dawn, the flame takes on new forms as it moves between traditions. It glows from a hanukkiah in a window overlooking the street, travels through a Nordic forest before first light, and finds warmth beside a hearth before finally rising into the night sky as a lantern.
The journey unfolds through intricate, layered dioramas cut from real paper and illuminated from behind. Each scene flows seamlessly into the next as the camera moves through doorways, past windowsills, and across landscapes. Live performers filmed in silhouette and real candlelight are incorporated into this handcrafted world, adding movement and a sense of human presence to the delicate paper scenes.
At its heart, The Longest Night is a celebration of the traditions that bring people together. Each scene offers a different culture's answer to the same question: What do you do when the nights grow long? And the answer is always the same: You make light, and you make it together.
