The Chinese New Year has long included traditions of defending against the evil “Nian” monster, whether by setting off firecrackers, covering our doors with red scrolls, sharing pun-filled meals with family, or dressing in red inside and out. As we face ongoing attacks on democracy and immigrant communities, this ritual of defense feels newly urgent. This is the time to armor up for a new year of resistance and hoard an abundance of love.
The Chinese Culture Center and Edge on the Square will host two days of activations, including screenprinting, a small press marketplace, know-your-rights booths, and dance-alongs. The iconic giant inflatable Arm Day, Leg Day returns with a surprising remix. This year’s Art Zone also kicks off CCC’s spring season, which includes Carry-On, a new exhibition by visiting Hong Kong political cartoonist Justin Wong, exploring satire, survival, and everyday politics.
