Details

On the morning of April 18, 1906, the great San Francisco earthquake sent shockwaves through the city, which were soon followed by a firestorm that raged for three days. On the first day alone, the fire destroyed the vibrant and densely populated Chinatown, dispersing its residents like embers in the wind. Seeing a chance to relocate the community, city politicians and power brokers made their move. However, driven by an irrepressible resiliency, the Chinese community reimagined and rebuilt Chinatown even better than before.
