WOMEN WHO RIDE is the tenacious story of Oakland’s first Black women’s motorcycle club, D’Vious Wayz, and its struggle to survive.
Join KALW for a preview screening and fundraiser for this powerful documentary about a vital group of Bay Area originals. Come watch the film and meet its director and protagonist live and in person at KALW's 220 Montgomery Live Event Studio and Gallery.
About the Film:
Tish Edwards, the club's founder, spends most of her days managing her accounting business and taking care of her son, who was paralyzed from the chest down in a 2004 car accident. Everyone in Tish’s community depends on her, and she thrives on this responsibility. Riding and the club are Tish’s outlets; she needs them to feel whole. Yet, issues with her own health arose, and in the last three years, she has only been on her bike three times. Without her leadership, many club members allowed their bikes to fall into disrepair. Tish sets her sights on her niece Taylor to take a more prominent role in the club and to finally get her motorcycle license.
The film will challenge stereotypes of who we often see riding motorcycles and demonstrate this close-knit community coming together to do something for the pure joy of the activity and the camaraderie they experience with other women. Against the backdrop of the Northern California landscape, audiences will come to know Tish and other key members of D’Vious Wayz MC during this monumental time in the group's existence.
